On March 7, 2011, a landslide ruptured an oil pipeline operated by Vintage Production California, LLC, releasing crude oil and produced water into Javon Canyon, Javon Creek and the Pacific Ocean near Faria Beach in Ventura County. An estimated 200 gallons of crude oil spilled. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) responded to the spill to conduct an investigation and oversee cleanup operations. A unified command was established with the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), CDFW and Vintage Production. CDFW, in consultation with the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment, closed a stretch of impacted shoreline to fishing in Ventura County on March 8 and lifted the closure on March 9. On March 17, CDFW, USCG and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service completed their assessment, determining the beach needed no further clean up, but the creek needed additional monitoring and maintenance of the spill containment dams.
