East Bay Bird Incident

Staff from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) investigates a wildlife incident involving a variety of bird species contaminated with an unknown material in the East Bay near Hayward. The International Bird Rescue (IBR) leads the rescue, wash, and rehabilitation of 100s of birds. IBR responders found more than 200 birds stranded with feathers matted with a substance described as "gooey." CDFW scientists have been working to identify the substance.
