Donner Lake Tanker Spill, Donner Lake, May 2010
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) and Nevada County Environmental Health responded to a diesel spill that occurred on May 26 when a tanker truck overturned and spilled as much as 3,000 gallons of diesel fuel along I-80 on the west side of Donner Lake. Some of the material washed over the side of the interstate into the soil and watershed of Billy Mack and Summit Creeks. Crews completed all diesel spill related work in the median along Interstate-80 near Donner Summit on June 25. Clean up of a smaller amount of spill impacted soil began mid-July on the south side of I-80 (Donner Lake side). A soil removal and long-term sediment and surface water monitoring plan were developed. Water sample results showed no diesel detections in Billy Mack Creek, Summit Creek or Donner Lake.
